**Parent Update Saturday**

Website update for Saturday 31 October

Thank you very much for your support yesterday. We were able to get all our students home safely and promptly following our decision to close the school.

Some of the swab samples from the hall and parts of the administration area have come back positive showing the presence of white, and possibly brown, asbestos in dust. The asbestos has come from the 1960s fibrolite roof of the school hall.

Asbestos removed expertly does not present a health hazard. Asbestos removal from the school will be done by experts. We are closing the hall and admin areas until the appropriate remedial action can be completed.

The health and safety of our students and staff is paramount and after consulting specialists we have decided to extend testing to the whole school. The testing includes air sampling, and surface swabbing, of all areas inside and outside the school buildings. This testing started yesterday afternoon and continues today (Saturday).

The results will not be available until Tuesday morning because of the volume of tests and the lab being closed on Sunday. So as a precaution, and with the agreement of the Ministry of Education, we have decided to close the school for Monday and Tuesday (2 and 3 November).

We have been in contact with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and obtained extensions to deadlines for student work submission that was due yesterday and next week. We have also discussed with them steps to be taken if there is any other disruption of student preparation for the NCEA examinations.

The senior academic prize-giving is scheduled for Wednesday evening. We would very much like to proceed with this and we hope that you will support the event as strongly as you always do. Helensville School has kindly given us the use of their hall. I will confirm details in a future up date.

Our objective is to have the school running again as soon as we can safely do so.

Please continue to check the website for further updates.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the school.
