On Tuesday 23rd February 5 Kaipara College Music students had the privilege going to Roundhead Studios to attend an APRA (Australasian Performing Rights Association) and Play It Strange songwriting masterclass with the people behind some of the biggest Pop tunes of the last decade. To start the event APRA gave a talk about how songwriters make money through royalties and taught the students how to register their songs to make money from radio play, live performances, online streaming and sales.
Students heard next from Sacha Skarbek and Maureen McDonald (AKA Mozilla) who co-wrote Miley Cyrus’ hit single ‘Wrecking Ball’ among songs for other artists including James Blunt, One Direction, Kelly Clarkson, Madonna, Charlie Puth, Rihanna and Lana Del Ray. It was an inspiring evening hearing these artists' stories and an eye-opener to the myriad of jobs in the music industry outside of being up on stage.
